Boaters against Motor Vessel Managed Access Regulations
The United Communities of Mountain Island Lake (UCMIL) petition against the Motor Vessel Managed Access Regulations being proposed by the Mountain Island Lake Marine Commission. As users of Mountain Island Lake (MIL) we reject the proposed Usage Fee which is described as a permit to operate a power boat on MIL. This un-disclosed fee is in addition to the normal Wildlife Registration and is being collected by the Marine Commission. We also reject the proposed restrictions on the length of boat allowed on MIL. In addition to the rejection of such proposed regulations, the UCMIL is petitioning for adequate time to review all available information and impact studies which support the Marine Commissions decisions for proposing such restrictions. The intent of the United Communities of Mountain Island Lake is to help users of MIL understand the changing needs of our lake and to serve as one voice in communicating with the Mountain Island Lake Marine Commission

Mountain Island Lake was created in 1924 to coincide with the building of Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station. Riverbend Steam
Station is also located on Mountain Lake and uses the lake to cool the steam that drives the turbines
Mountain Island Lake is fed by the Catawba River, and is the smallest of the three man-made lakes that border Mecklenburg County,
North Carolina Lake Norman, and Lake Wylie. Mountain Island Lake is managed by Charlotte-based Company Duke Energy. The lake has around 3,281 acres of surface area and 61 miles
of shoreline.
The primary function of Mountain Island Lake is to provide drinking water for residents of Mecklenburg, and Gaston County.
The lake is also accessible to the public for boating and fishing use.
Public Boat Access: From I-85 exit 37 head north on Beatties Ford Road about 12 miles to SR-2165.
Turn left (west) and continue to ramp. From I-85 exit 26 take NC-273 north to its intersection with NC-16.
Turn right (back toward Charlotte) and go south about a mile
to SR-1912 (at Duke Power Village). Turn left and it's about a 1/2 mile to ramp.

Inside of Mountain Island Lake is a small island called Mountain Island. This used to be a fun place to go camping,
for year families would enjoy weekends of fun on the island. A small group of people who think they own the lake have
stopped all camping activates on the island and want to stop boat access and Jet skies and water skiing on the lake.
